A gift from heaven

Meena  was in the temple on the tenth death annivesary of her son,Sonu. She had organised a special Puja in his memory. The priest was reciting the Shlokas from  the Maha Bhagwat, but Meena's mind was not there. She was lost in the thoughts of  the private ward of  Oncology Department, where the doctor had  just  pronounced  that her fifteen year old son could not survive, in spite of best efforts. He died of  blood cancer. She was completely shattered. He was her only hope. Her husband had died three months earlier. She had not recovered from the demise of her husband, when the news of her son was announced. She wept bitterly, when the hospital staff came to collect Sonu's body. Before he died, Meena's husband had signed a form declaring  his own and his son's body for donation. Meena was in an  unconscious state, when the body of Sonu was removed. The hospital nurse gave a lock of hair which she had cut , to Meena to keep it as a memory of Sonu.
Suddenly the priest announced," Madam, what are you thinking? The Puja is over." Meena got up to put a garland on the photograph of her son. Her hands were trembling. As soon as she was about to garland the photo, the garland fell from her hands.A small five year old boy,who looked so simple, sweet and sensible for his age, took the garland, and giving it in the hands of  Meena said,
,"Aunty, will you make me your son?".

  1. It's so touching. Though it's difficult to replace a son, one should never say No to love coz we never know where it comes from.

  2. Beautifully written. In this world there are so many who loose their children or never had one and there are children who have no parents. If both become each other's refuge so much misery could be erased from this world.

  5. Ah, so sweet, bittersweet that is. I imagine she would heartily say yes to replace a bit of the pain, though no one can replace her son fully of course. <3
