A common housewife

The job of a housewife is very tough. From morning to night there is always some thing to be done. If not physically, then mentally. All the twenty four hours, you are engrossed. If she is a working woman ,oh my,my my even twenty four hours are not sufficient to complete all the tasks  meticulously .About that we will discuss some other time. Today I will dwell on the travails and tribulations of "domestic working woman". there is neither any casual leave nor any service rules. She is a twenty four hour  emloyee' .
Just have a peek into her working hours. She has to get up, when hubby is in the thick of some interesting dream, which  she will perforce be obliged to  listen and comment 'too', otherwise she will be blamed of not paying any attention to what dear hubby is talking.'Chalo chodho' why should  we bother what heroic deed the great man is narrating to the poor wife, who has to perforce listen to him and laugh( at least pretend to).Her thoughts are some where else. the children have to be woken up, their breakfast has to be prepared and packed in the tiffin box. They have to be given milk, which has to be boiled. If she interrupts, then she will have to hear another big lecture.
Thank god,the dreaming session is over. Hurriedly she does everything required for the children to leave for school. Till then , the lord and the master of the house is restlessly shrieking for the shaving kit, hot water and the news paper. Now, till he completes his shave and bath , she prepares his breakfast and packs his lunch box. While she is at her job, Husband dear is facing so many tough situations, which cannot be solved without her. Some day the shirt button is broken, another day his socks are missing, yet another day his purse and icard  are untraceable. She has to run from the kitchen to their room.  Finally he leaves. She hardly gets time to sit, when the maid arrives.
While the maid is washing the vessels, she  has to collect the clothes from the bed room and the toilet and put them in the washing machine. She makes the beds and arranges the things. The children's room looks nothing less than a battle field. Every thing is topsy turvy.
Suddenly she realises that she has not had any thing since morning. She tells the maid to prepare a cup of tea for her. By the time her bath for the day is over, its time for the children to come back from school.Again the chaos, removing school dress, throwing it in all the corners of the room, not coming to the dining table and shouting at their mother that same old boring vegetables are  made. In the afternoon, she wants to rest but children  have a different agenda. She has to help in their homework, solve their  mutual bickerings and what not.
In the evening children run out to play  without keeping their books on the proper place. Hurriedly she makes some tea, and is off to her 'office'. Now starts the real dilemma! What to make.!! The biggest issue is what to cook!!! Actual cooking is not as much a problem as taking a decision, what to cook. On the dining table she is the one who is bombarded  from all sides. There is only one item for which everyone has unanimous  liking, that is Panir (cottage cheese)On no other dish there is unanimity. Every one has a different voice. Sometimes, she thinks that she should prepare and leave every thing on the table and go off to bed. No, she has to face this drama every single day at dinner time.
What is your experience as a house wife> How do you resolve the issue of 'what to cook'?

  1. Even though this house wife is in India, and I am in Canada, I can definitely relate, except for having the maid part. No one has maids here in Canada except for the more affluent types. Still, I could relate about the frustrations of all the work to be done, never being caught up and not feeling appreciated. I'm sure it's a universal complaint of mothers everywhere, working or stay at home moms. I've done both roles, the working mom and the stay at home mom and they're both challenging.

  2. Yes, it is definitely a challenge every day. I don't know anyone that has a maid and wonder what that would be like. As far as what to cook for dinner, I usually plan all my meals a week in advance. Many days I use the slow cooker and dinner is ready when I walk in the door at the end of the day.

  3. Usha ji many would be able to relate to this post! Though I work full time and have a cook who prepares our tiffins in the morning, the 'what to cook for dinner' is a task I have to manage on my own ;) and sometimes when it gets a little too overwhelming we just order out! ;)

    1. Yes Aditi, even if there is a cook, It is for the housewife to decide what to cook. So all the brick bats, she has to bear. I have experienced both situations.

  4. I don't have children, and my husband does all the cooking, so I think that makes things a whole lot different for me! :)

  5. I am fortunate, too. In the United States few of us have maids. I've been employed full time outside the home for most of my life, my son is grown and I am fortunate that my spouse helps out around the house, including with the cooking. But enough women in the United States would identify completely with the "work is never done" Alana

    1. In India also it is becoming very difficult to get a maid. You are really very fortunate to have a husband, who happily does this job> It shows his great love for you. Lucky you!!

  8. Hats off to all moms. Two months mom went for vacation to hometown, and I had to look after the house, of course with the help of a full time maid. But still it was not easy.
